The Judge Licensing and Standards Committee has recommended with the SCNA Governing Council that standard disqualifications be brought together in a single resource document to bring clarity to our judging procedures. The Serama was officially accepted as a breed in 2011 and follows the “Single Comb Clean Legged” classification with the ABA. This document is closely adapted to our needs from the ABA standard. This document includes clarification as it pertains to sanctioned exhibition on general disqualifications.
NOTE: Any show management may at their discretion offer fun and novelty classes of any type. This document specifically applies to sanctioned tabletop exhibition classes only.
Standard Unification
(adapted from the Disqualifications of Bantam Chickens)
In the event that any defects described here are found to exist, it shall be the duty of the judge to disqualify the serama involved and state the nature of disqualification on the score card although it must be understood that under all disqualifying clauses, the Serama shall have the benefit of the doubt.
- Since shape makes the breed and color makes the variety, any Serama lacking in shape shall be eliminated from competition.
- Any Serama showing symptoms of a contagious or transmittable disease or external parasites shall be excluded from competition. Such a specimen shall be removed from the premises.
- Faking in any manner (Gluing of tail feathers, surgical or external support devices for tail carriage, dying of feathers, etc)
- COMB:
- Comb foreign to the breed
- Single comb falling below the horizontal plain where the comb begins to lop
- Single comb with a side sprig
- Split comb
- Inverted Comb
- EYES:
- Blind in both eyes
- Irregular pupil indicating bird is affected with leucosis (Marek’s Disease)
- MUFFS, BEARDS, CRESTS
- Presence of muffs, beards, or crests
- BACK:
- Crooked or deformed
- TAIL:
- Permanent absence of all main tail feathers
- Split tail
- Squirrel Tail
- Wry Tail
- WINGS:
- Clipped primaries or secondaries
- Slipped Wing
- Horizontal wings
- SHANKS & TOES:
- Bow legged
- Deformed legs
- Knock knees
- Creeper legs
- Malformation of foot and/or foot joint
- More or less than 4 toes
- The unmistakable evidence of (or the removal of) any feather, stub or feather like growth. Seramas are a clean legged breed.
- PLUMAGE:
- Plumage foreign to the breed
- The permanent absence of feathering other than a seasonal molt (for example naked necks or rumpless)
